Kansas hosted Nowata Tuesday, Sept. 5 with a 20-7 blowout win and then finished third in the Wyandotte tournament beating Quapaw 3-2, Class 2A, 20th ranked Wyandotte 6-3, Ketchum 6-2 and Class 3A 9th ranked Adair 5-4. They fell to Class 3A, 7th ranked Oktaha 5-4 in the semi finals.

“We are starting to swing the it better at the plate,” said Coach Austin Graham. “Ashlyn Bird is really starting to become a great pitcher and challenging batters.”

Kansas 20 Nowata 7

Kansas wasted little time scoring 12 runs in the first inning and seven in the third.

Kansas finished with 18 hits in the game led by Kelsey Guthrie and Lainie Payton going 4-4 at the plate. Bert Brewer was 2-3 while Ashlyn Bird, Addison Gregory and Ashton Bird also had hits.

Guthrie pitched two innings with four hits, four walks and two strikeouts. Ashlyn Bird was one the mound for one inning with one hits and one strike out.

Kansas 3 Quapaw 2

Kansas won the game in the sixth inning when Kaylee Armbrister hit a walk off double to bring Ashlyn Bird in to score the winning run. Lady Comets had tied the game earlier in the inning when Tyra Verrette scored off a Guthrie single.

The Lady Comets had 10 hits in the game with Gregory going 3-3 to lead at the plate. Guthrie, Armbrister and Verrette all had two hits each.

Guthrie and Bird combined to get the win on the mound with three hits, four walks and one hit in the game.

Kansas 6 Wyandotte 3

Kansas finished with seven hits in the game with Gregory leading the way with two. Payton, Ashlyn Bird, Ashton Bird, Maggie Barnard, and Tyra Verrette all getting hits.

Bird got the win on the mound with two strike outs and no walks.

Kansas 6 Ketchum 2

All the runs in the game was scored in the fourth inning. Guthrie, Armbrister, Gregory, Brewer, Ashton Bird and Megon Schwabe all hit the ball for the Lady Comets.

Kansas had three hits from Ashlyn Bird, Barnard and Ashton Bird.

Ashlyn Bird got the win with four batters struck out and no walks.

Kansas 5 Adair 4

Brewer doubled in the top of the seventh inning to score Ashton Bird with the winning run. Guthrie, Payton, Barnard, Brewer, Ashlyn and Ashton Bird all had two hits in the game.

Ashlyn Bird pitched the win with three walks and eight hits.

Oktaha 5 Kansas 4

Oktaha scored a run in the top of the eighth inning to win the extra inning game.

Armbrister led the team with two hits while seven other Lady Comet players had a hit each.

Ashlyn Bird pitched the game with seven hits and four strike-outs.

What’s next?

Kansas travels to Adair Tournament this week for a tournament Thursday to Saturday, Sept. 14 to 16.  

The OSSAA released the district assignment for Class 3A and the Comets drew Salina at home.

“Salina will be tough. They are well coached and they will be ready to play,” said Graham.

Districts will be played Sept. 21-22.
