Ironically I write this on Labor Day, a day most cease from their labors to relax and play instead. So I looked through the verses in the Bible that talk about labor and I want to share three that caught my attention.
In I Thessalonians 1:3 the apostle Paul is explaining why he thanks God for them when he prays for them. “We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.”
There are three things he mentions: their work, their labor and their endurance. Notice what motivates these great expending of energy: their faith, their love and their hope. Then notice how all of this is focused: in our Lord Jesus Christ. Could he say that of us?
Then in I Corinthians 15:58 there is a promise for faithful labor for the Lord. “Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”
Then there is the hope that we have that one day we will rest from our labors in heaven with our Lord, but the work we have done for Him will continue to bear fruit. Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on.” “Yes,” says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.” (Rev. 14:13)
Those verses should challenge us to continue in faithfully serving our Lord. Serving Him is labor that will not be wasted or go unrewarded.
