The Jay high school baseball team will have a chance beginning with the 2017 season to determine where they will be playing in the playoffs.

The OSSAA voted in July to add districts in Class 4A and the districts were announced in November.

"We are in the new baseball districts," said Jay baseball coach Mike Moore. "It eliminates the ranking process. It will keep the coaches from voting for their friends."

The district schedule is set up each season with games in district five being played back-to-back.

"It is one of those things that you have to play back-to-back," Moore said. "Our district voted to set up the schedules that way. They were trying to get everyone to do that across the state."

By playing in the districts, a team's playoff future is determined by how they finish in district play.

"You play yourselves into the playoffs there are no more rankings in Class 4A," Moore said. "For exampl,e a number eight will go to a number one. The playoffs are already set up through the state tournament. You you know by how you finish where your next step is in the playoffs. It is all predetermined. Everything is already set up before the season starts. How you finish determines where and who you play."

The districts were set up in July and updated in November. Moore was on the adviser committee that helped set up the Class 4A districts.

The teams in District Five with Jay are Grove, who is dropping down from Class 5A, Locust Grove, Miami, Oologah, Tulsa Webster, Vinita and Wagoner. The schedule for Jay changed very little with most of the teams already on the Bulldogs schedule. Only the format for when they play those teams has changed.
