Lowe’s and Oklahoma Blood Institute (OBI) are partnering this holiday season in a drive to save lives. Healthy, Grove-area residents, 17 and older, are encouraged to donate blood 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 2131 S Main.
Donors will receive a free movie ticket and license plate frame, along with Members for Life points to redeem at OBI’s online store and free health screenings.
Donations take about an hour and can be made every 56 days. To make an appointment to donate, call (918) 477-0400 or visit www.obi.org. Photo identification is required to donate.
“We hope donors will see their way clear to helping others this holiday season,” said John Armitage, M.D., Oklahoma Blood Institute president and chief executive. “Blood donation has become regarded as routine, when it’s really extraordinary,” Armitage said. “Giving blood allows us to heal others by literally giving of ourselves.” As many as three lives can be saved with each unit donated.
OBI provides every drop of blood needed by most hospitals statewide.
“With the most common blood types, we’re operating with only a three-day supply,” Armitage said. “We wouldn’t feel comfortable doing that with vaccines, sutures or other medical needs. And we shouldn’t with blood.”
About 120,000 volunteer, Oklahoma blood donors give more than 250,000 units each year. Still, the need for blood donations remains great. Studies show one in three people will need blood during a lifetime. For more information, visit www.obi.org.
