Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake Adoption Story of “I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY”

Pictured is Alice, 11-month old black lab mix adopted by Bob and Barbara Killion of Grove, Oklahoma, from the Grove Humane Society.

Alice, along with 8 of her siblings, was born at the Humane Society in February 2008, after her mother was found tied to a pole in the shelter’s parking lot on a very cold winter night.

Alice brings joy and delight to Bob and Barbara every day.  The following is an adoption  story from the Humane Society of Grove and Grand Lake through the eyes of a dog:

“I rescued a human today.  Their eyes met mine as they walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels. I felt their need instantly and knew I had to help them. I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so they wouldn’t be afraid.

As they stopped at my kennel I blocked their view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage. I didn’t want them to know that I hadn’t been walked.  Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn’t want them to think poorly of them.

As they read my kennel card I hoped that they wouldn’t feel sad about my past.

I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone’s life.

The woman got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.

I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; I could tell both were desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down the woman’s cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.

Soon my kennel door opened and their smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into their arms.

I would promise to keep them both safe. I would promise to always be by their side.

I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in their eyes. I was so fortunate that they came down my corridor.

So many more are out there who haven’t walked these corridors. So many more humans to be saved.

At least I could save these two.  I rescued a human today!”
