Grove student Josh Wilhelm was selected from more than a thousand musicians nationwide to play in the National Association for Music Education (MENC) National Honor Ensembles Concert in Washington D.C. over the summer.
“It was really special,” said Josh’s father, Grove High School Band Director Joe Wilhelm. “Not only was Josh the only Oklahoman there, he was representing Grove.”
Joe Wilhelm is the President Elect of the Oklahoma Chapter of the MENC, but Josh had to apply for the honor like all the other students in the United States.
“He had to audition,” Wilhelm explained.
It was the first time a Grove student has made it to the National Conference, Wilhelm said.
Students from 38 states were selected to participate in the program.
Josh played percussion in the concert, which was held at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on June 27.
He also got to see some very memorable sites, Wilhelm said.
“He and (his mother) Patsy went to Mt. Vernon one day. Josh is a big George Washington fan, so that was pretty special,” Wilhelm said.
